It’s one of the most used phrases in productivity, but people rarely know what it actually means, or how it affects them every day.
You see, most of us wake up and check our phone or let negative thoughts creep in and affect our day.
Focus is the opposite of this. Focus is deciding that you can’t afford to be distracted or subscribe to another person’s agenda.
“Always remember, your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon to Anakin, Star Wars Episode I
Qui-Gon was a wise Jedi indeed. But how can we use his advice and set up our day so we ‘Get In The Zone’ and focus automatically?
Well in this post I will be doing just that. Here’s 5-Steps to Getting in the zone consistently
1. Stop consuming, Start creating
When I was 8 years old my Dad said something that I still remember to this day. He said “In this world, there are 2 types of people, consumers and producers”, It struck a chord with me and I believe my life was shaped by this seemingly insignificant comment.
This is very similar to how our brain works when it comes to productivity. It has 2 modes, one is a creator that’s on its own agenda and the other one is reacting to every event and situation. It very important, especially in the morning, to be on your own agenda. Don’t check your emails or use facebook early in the morning as it sets the tone for the rest of the day.
2. You don’t have to be a Monk to Meditate
Meditation is an entrepreneur’s best friend. Hmm…That doesn’t have the same ring to it, but it’s true! Meditation allows you to train your mind to focus on one thing, your breathing. This is critically important when it comes to getting in the zone because it quietens your mind and allows you to be fully present to the task at hand.
3. One thing at a time
You have to train your mind to laser focus on one task at a time. This is easier said than done. There are so many niggling thoughts and doubts we have in this world that it can be hard to sit down and work without your brain reminding you of them every 5 minutes. Realise that this is a habit. A habit that can be reversed.
The night before your working day, write down everything you have on your mind. Separate this into 2 lists. One containing the actionable items, and the other filled with the things you can’t control. You can then integrate the actionable items into your day and throw the other list in the bin! You’ll be amazed at how much this calms down your mind and helps you laser focus.
4. Visualise and plan
You have to plan for distractions or they will plan to distract you! Think about situations that could arise and take you off track and then settle them in advance. For example, will the client need X item for the sales funnel? Probably. Can I provide it in advance? Yes.
Visualisation is commonly used by top Olympic athletes. There have even been studies where golf players have increased their golf handicap by 2 without swinging a club, they just visualised the shot before playing! Visualise yourself working in the zone and overcoming boredom or barriers and you will have more laser focus than before.
5. Baby steps!
Focus is a muscle. And like any muscle, it must be trained. Baby stepping hours of being in the zone is a real necessity. Start by testing where your productivity level is now. How long does it take you before you start getting distracted or have the urge to check facebook? Organise 5-minute breaks at this time, but extend it by 2-5 minutes every day. Before you know it your laser focus muscle will be strong like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s muscles in 1970.
